Pastor's Message

I have worked at ten different houses of worship during the past 20 years. At each church I serve I remind the ushers that they have a very important job. I tell them that this is a guest house on many levels.

Many people have not attended a church for many years. And the last church experience they had so long ago was very painful. So our house of worship must provide a warm welcome. As church we have an opportunity to share God's love in so many ways to each other. However, I want to ask all of us to look for and explore ways to share God's love with all guests from all walks of life who may come to our door.

We must be ready to immediately share our gifts of compassion, joy and church family with that unexpected visitor who comes without warning or expectation to our front door. I ask you to ponder the words of this poem, "The Guest House" by Jellaludin Rumi.

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture.
Still treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice
meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.
Be grateful for whatever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
